Traveling off-road in a four-wheel-drive vehicle can be a great adventure, but you should have the tools to get your vehicle out of a tough spot if necessary. Installing a winch for off-road recovery can help. There are some things you need to ensure you can use the winch correctly and get yourself moving.

Winch And Line

When you are ready to mount a winch on your truck or SUV, it is essential that you choose one that is strong enough to pull you out of mud, soft soil, or off of an obstacle. Winching your truck through mud or over an obstacle like a large rock means the winch needs to be able to pull more than the weight of the vehicle.

Check with the winch manufacturer to determine the winch rating that is right for your vehicle before making your purchase. The winch cable or rope needs a rating for the weight you are pulling but can be run through a snatch block to create a double line that is twice as strong as the single line configuration.

Mounting Systems

Attaching your new winch to your vehicle comes with some options. A permanent mount can be used to bolt the winch to the truck's frame but limits the use to one direction only. If you choose to put it on the front of the truck, and you do not have a winch point in front of you, your winch can not help you.

A portable mount that uses a class 5 receiver hitch as the mounting point allows you to move the winch from one end of the vehicle to the other. The mounts are available from most four-wheel-drive shops and can be easily bolted onto the frame to create a strong mount that you can pull from.

Winch Accessories

When installing a winch on your truck or four-wheel drive, you should also consider some accessories to go with it. A tree saver, or short wide nylon strap that goes around a tree to protect it, is an excellent addition to any winch. The strap is strong, and you can connect the winch line directly to it, and it will keep the bark on the tree from being damaged when pulling.

Include a good set of leather gloves in your winch kit to protect your hands and some shackles that you can connect anchor points or another vehicle. A winch line weight is also an excellent addition to the kit and is used to add downward weight to the winch rope to cause it to fall if the line breaks. There are also winch accessory kits that come with all the tools and accessories you need to use your winch when the time comes.
